Covers I'm excited For!!

Here's Rihanna on the cover of Glamour. She is voted as one of the Women of the Year with Michelle Obama and many others. As much as I love Rihanna, I wonder why is she woman of the year? For finally speaking out on the Chris Brown situation? I definitely applaud her for FINALLY, key word FINALLY speaking out on it but I don't know. The cover is definitely gorgeous, this is the Rihanna I love. The fashionable, young, and fresh girl. What do you guys think??

Here's Rob Pattison and Kristen Stewart on the cover of Harper's Bazaar what do you guys think of the cover? Honestly I think it's really cute. It makes them look like an actual couple (still rumors that they actually are).

Chanel Iman and Jourdan Dunn

I've finally read the latest Teen Vogue issue with Chanel Iman and Jourdan Dunn on the cover. I absolutely adored the pictures taken of them by Patrick Demarchelier which shows why they are two of the biggest models out there. The article was also really great showing how the modeling world is still a little discriminating. I didn't think it was still like this but apparently it is. Chanel stated in the article by Jane Keltner that "You're being told, 'So and so is only booking one black girl. It's either you or Jourdan....." I was so shocked that this could still be going on especially with all the other beautiful ethnic models that are out like Arlenis Sosa and Sessilee Lopez that I've seen in many runway shows but then I notice they are not in every runway show. You think with all that has happened this past year with us having an African American president and all that we wouldn't look at color in the fashion world but apparently some still do. Seriously who would say "So and so is only booking one black girl" ?! Really I thought when booking models for a runway show it just depended on who was good and who could rip the runway. More into the article you find out this is what made Jourdan and Chanel not as close as before. The girls noticed it was stupid what they were doing and came to a compromise. Jourdan said "We said 'Why are we fighting? It doesn't make any sense,'" Chanel agreed saying "The only way to improve the situation is to come together." and this is how this story got put together really. My favorite quote was by designer Alexander Wang who basically said what I thought. "For some designers, it's their 'thing' to make a statement with a black girl, but I just cast who I think is cool."

Some quick Fashion News!

OK! magazine named Kim Kardashian as a contributing beauty editor. Her first assignment is to cover New York Fashion Week, where she'll be filing reports and taping videos from backstage at fashion shows.

-So yeah I love Kim Kardashian and all but how does she have a job at a magazine company and I don't?! I hope she is like really passionate about this!

As part of Beyoncé's world takeover, House of Deréon will expand into Greece for the spring 2010 season.

-Yay! Go Beyonce!

And this is not really news but I wish I was able to go to Fashion's NIght Out! It seems like so many things are going to be happening, its crazy! But that's what happens when your a college student!

On to fashion! i-D Magazine's new September issue have what I believe are the models of our future. Chanel Iman, Sessilee Lopez, Jourdan Dun, Arlenis Sosa, and Emma Summerton! I gotta get this issue of i-D it's like a collectors!

R.I.P. Naomi Sims 1948-2009

One of the world’s first Black supermodels, Naomi Sims, passed away August 3, 2009, after a battle with cancer. She was 61. Sims personified the term “Black is beautiful,” while breaking racial barriers both on the runway and as businesswoman. Before Sims, no dark-skinned model had ever received so much exposure, praise, and professional prestige. I have never heard of Naomi Sims (I say I'm always learning something new about the wonderful world of fashion) but from what I'm learning about her she was really succesful in her day especially as a dark skin model when blacks weren't even accepted like that in the fashion world. She was a fashion role model. “When she put on a garment, something just marvelous happened,” said fashion designer Halston, one of the first major fashion houses to hire Sims. In 1986, Naomi Sims Beauty Products was established and featured cosmetics for Black women. Sims’s also manufactured and sold wigs—her line became a competitor amongst top industry brands. By 1989 her brand grossed 5 million dollars! In 1976, her first book, “All About Health and Beauty for the Black Woman,” was published with three more books to follow, including “How to Be a Top Model,” “All About Hair Care for the Black Woman,” and “All About Success for the Black Woman.” “I would be nowhere if it weren’t for Black women,” said Sims in the African American Business Leaders. You will be truly missed Naomi Sims!

The September Issue

Hi Fashion Lovers! Some of ya'll may have heard and some of ya'll may have not but Vogue is making a documentary about there infamous September issue, the largest issue that Vogue publishes each year! It all started September 2007 with there issue weighing nearly 5 pounds! I can't imagine how much fashion was in that one issue! The documentary the September issue follows the Vogue team and we'll see how the issue is made. Wsj.com said that fashion greats such as Andre Leon Talley, Grace Coddington, Thakoon Panichgul, Karl Lagerfeld, Vera Wang and Mario Testino are to appear in the documentary. I CANNOT wait to see this movie! It premiered January 16th, 2009 but it is premiering to the US August 28th, 2009. The film is already winning awards. The September Issue won the Grand Jury Prize for Excellence in Cinematography at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. And here is the trailer! Enjoy fashion heads!

The End of Vibe Magazine

Vibe magazine is ending after 16 years. Unfortunately they had some financial troubles. Steve Aaron, Vibe Media’s chief executive officer, said the inability to receive additional financing to “restructure the huge debt on our small company” and the collapse of fashion, automotive and multicultural advertising were the main reasons for the magazine’s collapse. If you are an avid reader of the magazine you probably noticed the decrease of the magazine. The magazine started in 1993 by Quincy Jones and had a spin-off magazine called Vibe Vixen (that did not last to long, folded in 2007). I remember Vibe being one of the biggest hip hop magazines out there! Now it is being taken away from our African American generation! What a shame, people from Justin Timberlake, to T.I., and even President Barack Obama appeared on the cover of Vibe magazine. So will you miss Vibe magazine? Comment in the comment section below!
